EKO X Cube 20L+20L recycling bin is an exquisite looking bin, with a very appealing grey-blue-ish colour with a brushed chrome lid (fingerprint proof). The low-key/neutral, yet very successful, design allows this bin to fit in pretty much any type of kitchen. It is sturdy and cleverly thought of; the inner plastic buckets to sort out the type of rubbish (recyclables or food waste) are 20 litres each.
The pedal operated lid is smooth, and the soft closing technology is a great feature for an object that is being constantly in use. The main lid (the one used to operate the bin) allows enough access to dispose of any rubbish on either compartment, although the angle of its aperture is about 60 degrees – so, just enough to be practical. The secondary lid (not operated by the pedal) will conceal any bin liner being used and grant full access to remove the bins (for maintenance and removal of the rubbish). Equally, this secondary bin has a soft close technology and opens 90 degrees. The pedal operating the main lid, is quite wide and practical.
The capacity, as mentioned before, is 20 litres for each of the bins – this is perhaps the slight negative point about the bin as, for a larger household (we are just two), this capacity would be significantly insufficient. Maybe just adjusting the bin dimensions ever so slightly to allow a 30 litre capacity for each of the inner bins or having a larger compartment (for the recyclables) would be something to consider in future bin models.
Overall it is an excellent and sturdy bin with a very pleasing and functional design.
The Koops –
This is a nice compact bin with two good size compartments. The slim rectangular shape means it doesn’t take up much room in the kitchen while still giving you two decent size bins to use. The soft close lid is a nice feature as well as the foot operated pedal meaning you don’t have to touch the bin with your hands at all to open or close it. The coating on the outside has a definite blue/green hue, it is not just a stainless steel colour which is something to bear in mind depending on the decoration in your kitchen. The containers are easily removed making recycling easy. No special bin liners are required and the bag grab feature is really good to hold any bag you choose in place snug against the bin.
AK41 –
The bin looks stylish and appears to be of good quality with a sturdy design. I like the brushed stainless steel look – no fingerprints to worry about.
Only time will tell, but the foot pedal seems strong enough (although if you step on it gently, the lid only partially opens). It’s useful when your hands get messy during cooking/cleaning. The lid has an automatic soft close function and the option to keep it fully open, although you do need clean hands to do that by lifting the rim up.
It has a panel for an odour filter, however it is not supplied, nor is any information as to where to obtain one.
There are two removable bin buckets inside in green and black. I’m not sure about the colour coding, as with a liner, you won’t see the colours anyway. Regrettably, both bins are quite narrow in diameter, which narrows further towards the bottom. You are not able to fit in bulkier items, such as a larger bottle of laundry detergent. I think if the two compartments were on top of each other drawer-style, rather than side-by-side, there would be more room for waste/recycling. Over the course of a week we have made daily trips to the outside wheelie bin with various recyclable items that would not fit into the EKO bin. That kind of defeats the object of having one in the kitchen.
The other issue we had with this bin is that it does not come with liners and the manufacturer does not appear to make any. The packaging proudly claims “no custom bags needed” and here lies the problem – so far I have been unable to find one that properly fits. The bins are narrow but long, so you either end up with narrow and short bags thus only using the top section of the bin space or (if you buy wider, taller liners) you realise on emptying that you only used a quarter of the plastic liner because the bags are far too wide. Seems like a complete waste either way.
We recycle a lot in our household, so we will need a more spacious bin with fitted liners for waste.
